As part of the Film Development Council of the Philippines’ A Curation of World Cinema, Joachim Trier’s marvelous film Sentimental Value makes its way to selected cinemas around the metro. This stunning film won the Grand Prix at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and has earned nine nominations at the upcoming Academy Awards – including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Renate Reinsve), Best Actor (Stellan Skarsgard), and Best Supporting Actress nods for Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas; all of which are deservingly so.

A beautiful story of a family broken apart by generational trauma and a resistance to facing their own dysfunction, Sentimental Value never plays for the drama. Instead, it shows great restraint, completely capturing the textures and layers of this kind of family strife.

Interestingly enough, the film centers on a house, the family home of Gustav Berg (Skarsgard). Gustav is a film director, an alcoholic and absentee father to Nora (Reinsve) and Agnes (Lilleaas). Nora is an actress of some renown, but her personal life is a mess. She cannot seem to find love and is currently having an affair with a married man, who happens to be a co-worker.

Agnes is married and has a son, Erik (Oyvind Hesjedal Loven), but she too carries the weight of her father’s absence, and from having been cast in one of her father’s landmark films as a child. When the sisters’ mother dies, Gustav’s ex-wife, Gustav returns to their lives to reclaim the house they grew up in because that house belongs to him.

While Agnes is more tolerant and accommodating towards her father, Nora is constantly butting heads with her father. He wants to direct a film set in their home, a story inspired by his mother who was tortured during the Nazi occupation and later took her own life in that very house; the suicide being the film’s climactic scene. He wants Nora to play the character of her grandmother but Nora refuses.

To get the project going, Gustav chooses to go with the Hollywood star Rachel Kemp (Fanning), a decision that further strains his relationship with Nora. As Gustav and Rachel rehearse scenes inside the house, Nora spirals with her mental health and the looming prospect of losing the home to her father.

What is incredible about Trier and co-writer Eskil Vogt’s screenplay is how each of the four characters – Gustav, Nora, Agnes, and Rachel – are all primary characters with their own character arcs and emotional journeys. They intersect yet each feels like the lead of their own film, and it just so happens that everyone is part of the same film. There’s so much weight in these character’s struggles, along with the insights and their discoveries about themselves as they navigate the emotional turmoil of their interconnected relationships, makes Sentimental Value utterly arresting; I couldn’t take my eyes off it.

Trier and cinematographer Kasper Tuxen have a beautiful habit of capturing these characters at their most unguarded moments. The way by which they shoot the house allows the setting to be an important character in the film. That house becomes the metaphor for their dynamics and for what they mean to each other. 

But what really drives this film are the performances. Everyone is so good here – Skarsgard and Fanning are tremendous in their roles, playing off of each other and allowing each of their characters to be revealed in how they interact with each other – but I really took notice of Reinsve and Lilleaas in this film. Nora is a powder keg, always ready to burst. Her opening scene, a panic attack just before she goes on stage to perform. It’s a high-wire act of a performance and she nails it in her very first scene. She maintains this energy and unpredictability throughout the film, that she’s currently my favourite to win the Best Actress trophy.

Contrasting her is the more mellow, more rational Agnes. Lilleaas has the toughest role because it’s the most subdued amongst the four primary characters, yet it is her warmth that serves as the foundation that allows the characters to feel their most human side. She is such a discovery for me.

I love these well-made, personal, and intimate slow films that explore human nature. Sentimental Value is a lyrical work, yet it remains grounded and rooted in very real family struggles. Sure, Gustav is a director and Nora is a great actress, they are not the most relatable people but the way they navigate through their issues with each other is so prevalent in any real powerful father-daughter dynamic. This film is so insightful, so tender, so heartbreaking. I am so glad that we get to see it on the big screen.

I knew nothing about The Housemaid before going in, aside from having seen bits of the trailer. I had no idea it was based on a popular book series by Freida McFadden, and I thought I had the whole movie pegged from the get-go. It didn’t help that Sydney Sweeney has received quite a lot of flak for her other activities outside of acting, so I was went in with very little expectations.

A sexy thriller about a housemaid entering a wealthy home filled with dark secrets. This is nothing new, really, but director Paul Feig and screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine have a lot of fun with the material and the premise, and a seriously arresting performance by Amanda Seyfried makes The Housemaid an enjoyable watch.

Sydney Sweeney plays Millie, a woman with a troubled past who takes a job as a stay-in housemaid for the very wealthy Winchester family. She meets Nina (Amanda Seyfried), who is all bubbly and cheerful and seems like a joy to work for. Once she gets the job, she meets Nina’s husband, Andrew (Brandon Sklenar), and their daughter CeCe (Indiana Elle).

Andrew is a mountain of a man; he’s handsome and charming while Cece is aloof and standoffish. Things soon turn sideways when Nina begins exhibiting sudden outbursts, blaming Millie for things she didn’t do or gaslighting her outright. Millie’s past creates the need to keep the job and, of course, Andrew comes to her rescue. We can all guess where this is going.

And it does go there but then it also has more twists and turns. Some you already suspect, others not quite so. But Feig and Sonnenshine do a fantastic job of keeping the tension high, slowly building it up and raising the stakes more and more until all hell breaks loose.

Sweeney’s doe-eyed looks work well for her role as Millie. When Nina starts to break down Millie with each passing day, Sweeney really embodies Millie’s victimization. You can’t help but feel sorry for her, being trapped between a rock and a very hard place. Andrew stepping in to Millie’s defense adds even more tension rather than a feeling of safety because you know it will further amplify Nina’s erratic behaviour and trigger her psychotic episodes. The film is very good at keeping you on your toes, with a few well-placed jump scares thrown in to add to the fun.

While Sweeney and Sklenar bring in the chemistry, heat things up with some very intense sex scenes, and deliver solid performances that fit right in with the film’s tone, it is Seyfried who elevates The Housemaid into a real horrorfest. She plays Nina’s duality down to a tee; sweet and warm when she’s lucid, then downright unhinged and, completely uninhibited when she’s at the opposite pole. It’s a really fun performance that really makes the film.

What could have been just a run-of-the-mill sexy thriller takes a twist and a turn and ends up touching on some feminist issues that subtly finds its way into the film’s third act. Less than a film that tackles social class disparity – issues about rich and poor – but more about women, and some of the things they face on a daily basis. It wraps these discussions up in an entertaining thriller that keeps you on your toes and offers up some sexy imagery along with it.

It’s a refreshing change and a breath of fresh air. And I know the book series has two successful follow-ups and the film teases a sequel. But I hope they don’t do it. I feel that it ended just at the right note. Not every story needs a sequel. Sometimes, as with the story we just watched, in this case The Housemaid, serves as a catalyst for our own imagination, letting us do the rest of the work ourselves.

If you’ve ever wondered what happens when cult horror collides with razor-sharp comedy and relentless action—well, wonder no more. The official trailer for “They Will Kill You” is here, and it’s a gloriously twisted invitation into a night of chaos, carnage, and crowd-pleasing mayhem.

Fitspiration: Moore trained like a real Navy SEAL, and combines this with strength, cardio, and martial arts routines. Her do one-arm pushups, three-chair push-ups, sit-ups, and pull-ups look effortless.

#3 Rocky (III & IV to be exact; 1982 & 1985)

Plot: Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), a small-time boxer from Philadelphia, is chosen to take on the reigning world heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), when the undefeated fighter’s scheduled opponent is injured.

Fitspiration: Rocky inspired 6 other movies, but Rocky III and IV are our favorites. Aside from the awesome training sequences, the legendary song “Eye of the Tiger” was written specifically for Rocky III. Get ready to rumble!

#4 Step Up (2006)

Plot: Street dancer Tyler Gage (Channing Tatum) teams up with classically trained ballerina Nora Clark (Jenna Dewan Tatum), to showcase their dance moves in a challenge that will determine their future. If you can’t get enough of this movie, there’s also Step Up 2: The Streets, Step Up 3D, Step Up Revolution, and Step Up: All In.

Fitspiration: Channing Tatum’s impressive moves and the movie’s pumpin’ OST. And have we already said that Channing Tatum’s starring in it?

#5 Honey (2003)

Fitspiration: This movie proves that running can push us to be a better, if not, the best version of ourselves.

Plot: In 480 B.C. a state of war exists between Persia and Greece. At the Battle of Thermopylae, Sparta’s King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) leads his badly outnumbered warriors against the massive Persian army.

Fitspiration: There’s the stylized fight sequences, and more importantly, the 300 sets of six-packs. That’s right, drop that double-patty burger and milkshake and we’ll see you at the gym in 15 minutes.

#8 Bloodsport (1988)

Plot: In his first starring role, 80s icon “Muscles from Brussels” Jean-Claude Van Damme is Frank Dux, an American Ninjutsu master that has gone AWOL from the Army to join an underground, full-contact martial arts tournament in Hong Kong.

Fitspiration: There’s a 6-minute training sequence where Van Damme spars blindfolded, does a mean split, and gets caned with a bamboo stick a la Manny Pacquiao.

#9 Enter the Dragon (1973)

Plot: Bruce Lee plays a martial arts expert determined to help capture the narcotics dealer responsible for his sister’s death. He joins a kung fu competition to infiltrate his dark and mysterious world.

Fitspiration: Catch the legendary Bruce Lee at the peak of his powers. Unfortunately, he was gone too soon.

Without Limits (1998)

Plot: Before legendary runner Steve Prefontaine (Billy Crudup) made it to the 1972 Munich Olympics, he was a track star at the University of Oregon. The movie follows Prefontaine’s love-hate relationship with his coach, who does not approve of his running style and mentors him to be the runner that he is.

Fitspiration: Learn more about the guy who once held the American record in seven different distance track events from the 2,000 meters to the 10,000 meters. Also, don’t miss Donald Sutherland’s portrayal of Bill Bowerman, the running coach who eventually became the co-founder of Nike.

Charli XCX’s acting era officially begins. In the feature debut of Aidan Zamiri, best known for directing her Brat-era visuals, Charli plays a heightened version of herself on her first headlining tour. It’s a mockumentary inspired by the Sweat tour, framed as a “2024 period piece” that imagines what might’ve happened had she made very different choices during the Brat rollout.

It’s tender, specific, and refreshingly uninterested in playing things safe, a romantic comedy drama that actually earns the word “romantic.”

Wuthering Heights (February 13)

Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights boldly markets itself as “the greatest love story of all time,” which is one way to frame a novel steeped in obsession, cruelty, and generational trauma. Margot Robbie plays an 18-year-old Catherine Earnshaw, while Jacob Elordi leans hard into Gothic heartthrob territory as Heathcliff. Expect lush visuals, maximal emotions, and discourse.

Scream 7 (February 27)

Kevin Williamson returns to Scream as writer and director for the seventh installment, bringing Neve Campbell back into the fold after her absence from Scream VI. While Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega sit this one out, Courteney Cox, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding return alongside a stacked group of newcomers, including Isabel May, Anna Camp, Joel McHale, and McKenna Grace. Ghostface never stays dead for long.

The Bride (March 6)

After the quiet menace of The Lost Daughter, Maggie Gyllenhaal pivots to monsters. Her latest draws inspiration from Bride of Frankenstein, with Jessie Buckley as the bride herself and Christian Bale as the latest iteration of Frankenstein’s monster. Expect something more emotional than explosive, and far stranger than your average remake.

Mother Mary (April)

David Lowery continues his genre-hopping streak with a psychological thriller centered on a volatile, psychosexual bond. Anne Hathaway plays a pop star plotting a comeback, Michaela Coel a fashion designer pulled back into her orbit when a dress becomes the catalyst.

The Drama (April 3)

A24 keeps things deliciously vague with Kristoffer Borgli’s follow-up to Dream Scenario. Zendaya and Robert Pattinson star as a happily engaged couple whose wedding week begins to unravel after unsettling truths surface. That’s all we’re allowed to know, but the teaser alone suggests maximum discomfort and premium chaos.

Michael (April 24)

Antoine Fuqua directs a sweeping Michael Jackson biopic, with Jaafar Jackson stepping into the role of his famous uncle. Producer Graham King has promised a film that aims to “humanise but not sanitise,” including a depiction of the sexual abuse allegations. Colman Domingo and Nia Long co-star as Joe and Katherine Jackson. It’s one of the most scrutinised projects of the year, before a single frame is released.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 (May 1)

Yes, The Devil Wears Prada is back. Nearly two decades on, the original creative team reunites, along with Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, and more. While plot details remain under wraps, the sequel is expected to draw from Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns. Fashion has changed. Miranda Priestly probably hasn’t.

Disclosure Day (June 12)

Steven Spielberg’s next film remains almost entirely under lock and key, aside from one tantalising detail: it involves UFOs. The cast? Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, and Wyatt Russell, suggesting something big, serious, and unmistakably Spielbergian.

Toy Story 5 (June 19)

Pixar’s fifth Toy Story introduces a modern menace: tech. Described by Pete Docter as “Toy meets Tech,” the film pits the old guard against Lilypad, a frog-like tablet voiced by Greta Lee that becomes Bonnie’s new favourite. Anna Faris and Conan O’Brien join the ensemble, alongside returning voices like Tom Hanks and Tim Allen. 

Moana (July 10)

Disney’s live-action Moana sets sail with newcomer Catherine Laga‘aia in the title role. The story remains largely faithful: a chief’s daughter leaves her island to save her people. Dwayne Johnson returns as Maui, because some things are simply inevitable.

The Odyssey (July 17)

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is already a phenomenon, with tickets selling a year in advance. It’s his most expensive film yet and the first shot entirely on IMAX 70mm. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, joined by Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya as Telemachus, Penelope, and Athena.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31)

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man officially enters a new trilogy under director Destin Daniel Cretton. Michael Mando’s Scorpion returns, Mark Ruffalo pops back up as Bruce Banner, and the focus reportedly shifts to street-level crime rather than world-ending threats.

Resident Evil (September 18)

Resident Evil gets rebooted, again, but this time with real promise. Writer-director Zach Cregger (Barbarian) delivers an original story set in the game’s universe without adapting specific characters. If anyone can finally make a great Resident Evil movie, it might be him.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (November 20)

Suzanne Collins’ latest Hunger Games prequel hits theatres with Francis Lawrence once again directing. Set during the Second Quarter Quell, the film centres on a young Haymitch Abernathy, 24 years before Katniss ever volunteers. Familiar characters return via recasting, with Jesse Plemons, Ralph Fiennes, Kieran Culkin, and Elle Fanning stepping into iconic roles. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson also reappear.

Focker In-Law (November 25)

Meet the Parents comes full circle. Ben Stiller now finds himself in Robert De Niro’s old position, as Greg and Pam’s son brings a partner home to meet the family. Ariana Grande, Beanie Feldstein, and Eduardo Franco join the chaos, with most of the original cast returning.

Dune: Part Three (December 18)

Denis Villeneuve closes out his Dune trilogy with Dune Messiah, jumping 12 years ahead to chart the consequences of Paul Atreides’ holy war. Timothée Chalamet returns, Robert Pattinson joins as a likely villain, and Jason Momoa is back, thanks to a little narrative resurrection. 

Avengers: Doomsday (December 18)

And finally, the Avengers assemble again. For the first time since Endgame, Marvel’s heroes reunite to face Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., of all people. They’ll be joined by Wakandans, the Fantastic Four, legacy X-Men, and the New Avengers. It’s massive, messy, and just the opening act for Secret Wars. Buckle up.

Sisa, written and directed by Jun Robles Lana, stars Hilda Koronel in her first film in over a decade. The setting is the Philippines in 1902, just after the Philippine-American War. The war may be “over,” but the violence hasn’t gone anywhere.

In the film, villages are hollowed out and women are left behind. What’s taken over is grief. The film premiered in competition at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, marking Lana’s return to Tallinn after About Us But Not About Us.

What is the Plot of Sisa?

The film follows Sisa, a woman who survives a massacre during the war and is later seen by her village as mentally unstable. Because she is dismissed and ignored, she can freely move through her surroundings. The story focuses on how Sisa navigates life after the war, as well as the choices she makes while living under occupation. It will also explore themes of violence, loss, and survival.

The Cast

Koronel leads the film as Sisa, supported by Eugene Domingo, Jennica Garcia, Tanya Gomez, Barbara Miguel, along with Angellie Sanoy, Jorrybell Agoto, Janina Mendoza, and Isabel Lamers. This marks Koronel’s return to film following her 2012 appearance in The Mistress, which earned her a Luna Award for Best Supporting Actress.
